Project FREEWheels
The self-propelled wheelchair

Project FreeWheels
Self-driving wheelchair for freedom
and autonomy
Challenge
Loneliness and dependence are common among people with a mobility problem, such as the elderly and people in a wheelchair. The needs of physically disabled individuals for independence and autonomy have been taken to heart in the co-creation of FreeWheels.
Solution
In this project, the first self-propelled wheelchair is developed, which enables users to live (more) independently with more autonomy, more choice, control and confidence in their personal life.
Role of the HealthFactory
Alternating groups of students in Electronics, Design and ICT use the R&D facilities, space, expertise and guidance provided by the HealthFactory to carry out their co-makership internship assignment. Residents and carers of WoonMere test FreeWheels.
